The Evolution of Garage Door Safety

Photo-Eye Safety Sensors
Photo-eye sensors are perhaps the most critical safety feature on modern garage door systems. They create an invisible beam across the doorway that, when interrupted by any object, immediately stops and reverses a closing door.
For proper function, the sensors must be properly aligned and free from obstructions. Dirt, spider webs, or misalignment can prevent the sensors from working correctly. Signs that your sensors need attention include the door not closing with the remote (but closing with the wall button), the opener lights flashing, or visible indicator lights on the sensors showing misalignment.
Regular testing is important. At least monthly, place an object like a cardboard box in the door's path and attempt to close the door. It should immediately reverse when the photo-eye beam is broken. If it doesn't, discontinue use of the automatic closer and call for service immediately.
Auto-Reverse Mechanism
The auto-reverse feature is a mechanical safety system that causes the door to reverse direction if it encounters resistance while closing. This protects against the door closing on a person, pet, or object that the photo-eyes might not detect, for example, something approaching from the side or an object too low to break the sensor beam.
This feature relies on proper force adjustment of the opener. If the force is set too high, the door may not reverse when it should. If set too low, the door may reverse unnecessarily due to normal friction. Professional technicians can properly calibrate this setting for optimal safety and performance.
Test the auto-reverse monthly by placing a 2x4 flat on the ground in the door's path. When the door contacts the board, it should immediately reverse. If it doesn't, adjust the force settings according to your opener's manual or call for professional service.

Every garage door opener is equipped with an emergency release handle, typically a red rope hanging from the opener carriage. Pulling this handle disconnects the door from the opener, allowing you to operate the door manually. This is essential during power outages or if the opener malfunctions.

Remember that when the door is disconnected from the opener, it may move freely depending on its balance, use caution when releasing a door that's in the open position.
Rolling Code Technology
While not strictly a physical safety feature, rolling code technology protects your home security. Each time you use your remote, both the remote and the opener generate a new code from billions of possibilities. This prevents code grabbing, where thieves capture your remote signal and use it to open your garage.
If your opener uses fixed codes (older models), consider upgrading to a newer opener with rolling code technology for enhanced security.
Door Balance and Springs
A properly balanced garage door is safer to operate manually and puts less strain on the opener. When springs are worn or improperly adjusted, the door may close too quickly, be difficult to control manually, or put excessive pressure on the opener mechanisms.
Test your door's balance by pulling the emergency release when the door is closed, then manually lifting the door halfway and releasing it. A properly balanced door should stay in place, perhaps moving slightly in either direction. If the door moves significantly up or down, the springs need adjustment.
Regular Maintenance for Safety
Safety features are only effective when properly maintained. Schedule annual professional inspections to ensure all safety mechanisms are functioning correctly. Between professional visits, perform monthly tests of the photo-eyes and auto-reverse features.
Keep the door and tracks clean and lubricated for smooth operation. Tighten any loose hardware, and replace worn weather stripping to prevent water damage and ensure proper door movement.
Educate all family members, especially children, about garage door safety. Establish rules like never running under a closing door, never placing fingers between door sections, and treating the door with appropriate respect for the powerful mechanism it is.
